The best known Porsche ever

911

When you think of Porsche, you usually think of the 911.  It's history dates back to 1963 and has always been one of the best exotics around.  Here you can look at the 911 models from 1963 to the present along with info and specifications.

Porsche 911 (1963-1969)

 20main.jpg (27866 bytes)

The first 911.  Production began in 1964 and many didn't consider it to be a "real" Porsche because it was too heavy and luxurious.  In '65, a cheaper version was released with a 4-cylinder and it became a big hit.  Also in '65, the Targa was released.  In 1965, the horsepower was increased by 30.  It was very fast however it spun out without warning at max speeds.   In 1969, Porsche improved on this by shifting the rear wheels back giving more stability.

Porsche 911 (1970-1971)

The C-Series 911 was introduced in 1970.  It had a more powerful engine and steering effort as well as kickback were reduced.  The weight of the car was also reduced by an aluminum engine lid and bumpers.  A lightweight version was also produced that was stripped of all unnecessary features and weighed 838 kg.

Porsche 911 (1972-1973)

In 1972, the engine was made more powerful.   The E had 160 horsepower than the S 190 while weighing only 1050 kgs.  The E-series had a oil tank that some confused for the gas tank.  The results obviously were pretty bad and Porsche decided to change that for the next year.  Because of aerodynamical work, the front-end lift was decreased by 40%.

Porsche 911 (1973-1977)

In 1973, the shock absorbing bumpers were added as well as the duck-tail and wale-tail.  The Carrera RS with an even more powerful engine. It was designed for racing and entered in the GT competition. 1636 were produced in total.  The Carrera RSR 3.0 was produced in '74 with 20 more horsepower.  The 911 Carrera was also produced. In 1975, the first Turbo was produced including a 3.0 liter turbocharged engine  Also notice the "black look"  The doorhandles, window frames, and wipers were all black.

Porsche 911 (1977-1983)

scmain.jpg (26290 bytes)

In 1977, Porsche replaced the 2.7 engine with a 3.0 liter engine.  Only 2 versions of the 911 were available in 1978.   The Turbo and SC.  The 911 gained weight because of the extra luxury but sold better so instead of reducing the weight Porsche decided to increase the power to 204 horsepower.  In '82 the SC Cabriolet was produced.  Other changes in the SC include side-indicators behind the front wheel  and a modified spoiler.

Porsche 911 (1984-1989)

In 1984, the 3.0 liter engine was replaced with a 3.2 liter.  Besides the increase in power, the brakes were improved and the 911 became more luxurious.  The Carrera came available with the wide body and spoiler of the Turbo.  While it actually slowed down the car, many did not car because it looked like a Turbo for a cheaper price.  The Club sport was introduced in 1987 with a lighter weight.  340 were produced.

Porsche 911 (1989-1993)

carrera24main.jpg (19108 bytes)

In 1989, The 911 was redesigned and the engine was increased to 3.6 liters.  4 Wheel drive was also added.   The Carrera 4 featured new brakes, transmission, suspension and more.  A self-adusting rear spoiler was added.  The Carrera 2 was introduced in 1990 and is almost identical to the Carrera 4 except it lacks the 4 wheel drive system.  The Carrera RS had a reduced weight and 10 more horses.

The present 911.  Production started in '98.   In my opinion it's the best looking 911 as well as the fastest.  Its power was increased to 296 HP in the Carrera and to 400 in the Turbo making it one of the fastest production cars in the world.  The lights were re-designed to look like the Boxsters' and the engine is now water-cooled as opposed to air-cooled like the previous 911s.
